Barcelona invents a clever trick to expel Pique

Barcelona wants to dispense with the services of Gerard Pique next summer, by taking advantage of a clause in his current contract

Pique’s contract with Barcelona extends until the summer of 2024, and despite being the most money-earning player in the team’s squad, he is no longer a key player in coach Xavi’s squad

And Mundo newspaper reported, Barcelona has the option to terminate Pique’s contract next summer, if he plays less than 35% of the team’s matches this season

Looking at Barcelona’s matches in La Liga, the King’s Cup and European competitions, the team may play between 50 to 55 matches this season

Therefore, Barca needs Pique not to participate in more than 19 matches, in order to end his contract next summer

So far, Pique has only participated in one La Liga match against Cadiz, and participated as a substitute against Victoria Plzen in the Champions League

The newspaper added, “If Pique leaves, Xavi will be keen to sign Athletic Bilbao defender Inigo Martinez”

Barcelona failed to sign Inigo Martinez for 12 million pounds, but the player’s contract expires with Bilbao next summer
